Joana Amendoeira is considered one of the most important “Fadistas” of the “New Generation”. In her singing, fado has a new flair, a new attitude, without leaving behind Tradition.
Born in Santarém on the 30th of September 1982, she participates in 1991 for the first time, in the “Grande Noite do Fado” in Lisbon, where she receives the best possible compliments from the audience and jury present. In 1995 she participates once again, in O-Porto, where she wins the first prize for best feminine interpretation.
From that year onwards she initiates a regular activity with shows throughout the country, auditoriums, theatres, and in the four corners of the world. In 1998 she goes abroad for the first time, where she sings in the “Dias de Portugal” venue, organised by ICEP in the city of Budapest (Hungary). In that same year she records her first album, entitled “Olhos Garotos”, making her one of the youngest “fadista” with a labelled album.
In 2000 she releases a second album, “Aquela Rua”, which is very well reviewed by critics. She begins a regular cooperation at “Club do Fado”, one of the most prestigious Fado houses in Lisbon, where she is part of the local cast.
While all this is happening, in Portugal, she is invited to be a part of the most prestigious discography collections such as “Novas Vozes, Novos Fados” of the label EMI/VC, the “Nova Biografia do Fado”, also from EMI/VC, in a homage album to Moniz Pereira (label Universal) and participates in the sound track of the TV series “Jóia de Africa.”
In 2003 she releases her third album “Joana Amendoeira”, a project that had the immediate acceptance from all the fado community, the revues and the public in general.
The tour for this album took her to several countries such as Holland, Spain, France, Austria. This allowed her to be chosen, among many candidates, to host her show in several professional World Music fairs, such as the Mercat de Musica Viva de Vic 2003 (Spain) and Strictly Mundial 2005 (Canada).
Joana Amendoeira, a young girl, once a promise, is now a sure talent in music’s national and international scene.
This was confirmed when she was given the Best Newcomer in 2004 by the “Casa da Imprensa”, and underlined in the album “Live in Lisbon” released in July 2005. The recording of her first live solo show in one of the most prestigious spots in Lisbon, the Teatro Municipal São Luiz, in November 2004.
The success of this show was registed to be shared amongst all the Fado and Joana Amendoeira’s talent fans. In her voice, fado reaches moments of sublime vocal harmony, felt and sensual. Joana Amendoeira is Fado in all its glory!
Right now Joana is preparing herself to release her fifth album “Á Flor da Pele”, with a previewed date of final October.
Musically directed by Custódio Castelo, and taped in the “Pé-de-vento” studios by Fernando Nunes, this album symbolises an intense and truthful relationship. The idea was to create a group of fados and not just a Fadista with her accompanying musicians.
Pedro Amendoeira in the Portuguese Guitar, Pedro Pinhal in the Classic Guitar, and Paulo Paz in the Double Bass and Acoustic Bass, instrument players and composers of some songs in the album, reveal how to create a strong and unique project it is necessary to live each moment as if it was the last.
In it all express a very personal mark, revealing all the feelings that are truly present in Joana Amendoeira “Á Flor da pele”.
In this work you can breath in Fado in the 13 songs that Joana Amendoeira and her musicians present us with.
